Our wonderful team of volunteer youth have been hard at work every Monday evening this summer–weeding, digging, watering, staking tomatoes, planting bulbs, rehabilitating compost piles, and more!

Are you a youth looking for a place to volunteer and have fun?  Join us!  Starting in September, we will be meeting every Wednesday evening, from 5:00-6:30, in the garden.  See you there!

The tomatoes are ripening, cucumbers are coming in by the armful, and everyone seems to be picking bags full of fresh herbs each evening–we’ve hit the summer harvest season in full stride at the Oriole Community Garden!  The garden is a buzz of activity each evening, with kids chasing butterflies and climbing trees, community members helping out in communal gardens, dozens of youth volunteering, arts classes under the trees, container gardening workshops, and of course gardeners lovingly tending their own plots.  One exciting new program we have is yoga in the garden–on Tuesday evenings an amazing teacher named Sunita guides people in simple stretches and breathing exercises.  You’re welcome to come join us–it’s every Tuesday from 5:30-7:00 (unless it’s raining).

It’s hard to believe that the summer is already winding down, but we’re starting the notice it getting darker earlier and becoming chilly in the evenings.  The kids are getting ready to go back to school, and everyone is gearing up for an exciting Community Harvest Festival on Saturday October 2nd!  Please save the date and come join for an all-day festival which promises to be the party of the season–kids games, corn roasts, community kitchens, yoga, arts classes, and more!

About our Garden: Our organic community garden is operated in partnership between Working Women Community Centre and the Advent Lutheran Church.  100 families tend their own garden plots, growing many cultural herbs, vegetables, flowers, and herbal healing plants.  The families here come from all over the world; our languages include Farsi, Urdu, Arabic, Romanian, Mandarin, and Cantonese.
